Oculus Rift History

Let’s talk about Virtual Reality. We’ll begin with the one that started it all: the Oculus Rift. Let’s look at its history:

On August 1 2012, the kickstarter for the Oculus Rift was first launched and on September 5 2012 the project was 947% funded, which means they raised nearly 2.5 million dollars. On September 26 2012 you could pre-order the developer kit online. They first wanted to start shipping the Oculus Rift before the holidays, but on November 28 2012 they had to push the shipping date to March 2013.

On March 29 2013 they did start shipping the Oculus Rift Development Kit to the backers. On August 19 2013 the Oculus Share Beta launched. This lets developers self-publish their games they made for the Oculus Rift and lets other players easily download these games.

On March 19 2014, almost a year after the first shipping of the Oculus Rift Development Kit, the Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 (DK2) is announced and starts shipping on July 24 2014. On September 3 2014, the Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition is launched. This is a new mobile virtual reality headset that uses the Galaxy Note 4 and is powered by Oculus.

March 1 2015, they announce that the Gear VR will be coming to Galaxy S6. On May 6 2015 Oculus Rift finally announces they will be shipping to consumers in Q1 2015 and we’ll be able to pre-order them later this year.

Tomorrow we’ll take a quick look at the other VR sets I could find.
